NUTRITION: THE MIRACULOUS BONE BROTH

Beloved Bone Broth.

Some of you might be saying, 'what the heck?' and others are riding the same love train that I'm on with this beloved broth, and know exactly what I'm speaking about.

A little bit of background regarding my health journey. When I started to feel ill in 2006 I very rapidly transitioned to a vegan diet overnight and did so for the next eight years. During that period I also became a fruitarian for a VERY short 6 weeks, and ate raw exclusively for a few months, both did not vibe with my body and its needs, but plant-based eating did. I felt absolutely incredible eating 100% plant based and attribute it to a large part of me healing with and from Lyme Disease. Without the 'acidic' nature of animal proteins, dairy + eggs (to which I'm intolerant to), it provided my body with the optimal healing environment, which is ultimately one that is alkaline. Not to say that eating paleo, being a fruitarian or everything in between is not optimal for healing, veganism, was what my body was asking for at the time.

Fast forward to 2015 when my body and healing journey started to shift, and I knew I needed something else, as I just wasn't as satisfied, satiated or grounded. A vegan diet can be quiet airy in nature, as it's very yin, so the balancing nature of yang (animal proteins) wasn't there for almost a decade. Again, I really want to stress that eating vegan is unreal, healing and truly incredible, and it works so well for so many people. This is simply my experience, journey and trial and error of what I found works absolute best for my body and lifestyle. I could feel my entire body yearning for a little more grounding, and root vegetables were not going to cut it :)

Enter in wild fish, little bits of organic chicken and what I want to talk about today BONE BROTH. The Bone Broth is quite new as I only started to drink it five months ago, but it's made such a large impact on my life, body, skin and overall well-being that I cannot not share. It's played a massive part in me feeling so well, and it will now be a daily (when possible) and weekly addition to my life forever. I call it the miracle broth, hefty claims, but I can attest for this proclamation first hand.

It is my elixir for glowing skin; as it's packed with protein, good fats, collagen (what your skin is made of!), and keratin (fibrous protein constituting the main protein of hair), all of which play a MAJOR role in strengthening hair, nails and giving you smooth, clear skin.  I can even go so far and say that it is so much better for you than Botox - something that has gained so much popularity in turns of wrinkles and aging.

A quick look into why, as I know girls as young as 25 injecting themselves with it, which can be very scary!

The real reason that Botox is not an effective treatment for wrinkles is because wrinkles aren’t caused by muscle contractions. Wrinkles occur when the collagen in your skin breaks down, the only stuff which gives your skin its elasticity. As we lose collagen, the skin becomes thinner and creases (aka wrinkles) form. So, if you really want to get rid of wrinkles permanently, you’ve got to increase your collagen levels. Botox simply paralyzes, it doesn't rebuild, and regenerate the collagen which is the only thing that will help when it comes to again skin.

You can apply collagen creams to your face to get rid of wrinkles, but the skin is inferior at absorbing it. There are a lot of oral collagen supplements that you can buy which is slightly better because the collagen is better absorbed. But they are pricey and liquid is always easier to absorb than pills… enter in Bone Broth.

When you cook down bones, it breaks down the collagen so it becomes more easily digestible.  This form of cooked collagen is better known to us as gelatin.

Bone broth also happens to be a digestion superfood.  This is because of  the wondrous gelatin.  Gelatin helps digestion by soothing the GI tract.  It also binds with water, which makes it a lot easier to eat cooked foods because water is reintroduced into the food.

You might think that digestion doesn’t have anything to do with skin, but this isn’t the case, it's the corner stone of almost everything in your body. Your digestive system is in charge of absorbing nutrients (which are obviously important for healthy looking skin), removing toxins (which cause all those nasty breakouts) and ultimately making you happy in the trifecta - body, mind and spirit.

Once you’ve cooked down bones to make your gelatin-rich bone broth you are left with a nutrient-rich liquid.  It isn’t just rich in collagen. It also has:

  • Bone marrow (depending on the bones), which is really important for blood health and immunity
  • Glycine and proline, which are amino acids that help produce heme (in blood) and glucose, and aid in digestion.  They also make your skin look great because they help support collagen.
  • Cartilage, which is important for joint health.  Especially valuable if you have arthritis.
  • Minerals like calcium and magnesium.

When I say it's miraculous, I truly stand by that. It's transformed my body from the inside out.
