I LOVE SUPERFOODS. Some of my favorites include - spirulina, chlorella, bee pollen, goji berries, cacao, hemp seeds, maca and medicinal mushrooms to name a few...but today we are spotlighting the little Açaí berry.
This little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world! Açaí (ah-sigh-ee) is the high-energy berry of a special Amazon palm tree.
Harvested in the rainforests of Brazil, açaí tastes like a vibrant blend of berries and chocolate (YUM!). Hidden within its royal purple pigment is the magic that makes it nature's perfect energy fruit. Açaí is packed full of antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids.
Açaí pulp contains:
-A remarkable concentration of antioxidants that help combat premature aging, with 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine.
-A synergy of monounsaturated (healthy) fats, dietary fiber and phytosterols to help promote cardiovascular and digestive health.
-An almost perfect essential amino acid complex in conjunction with valuable trace minerals, vital to proper muscle contraction and regeneration.
-The fatty acid content in açaí resembles that of olive oil, and is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid. Oleic acid is important for a number of reasons. It helps omega-3 fish oils penetrate the cell membrane; together they help make cell membranes more supple. By keeping the cell membrane supple, all hormones, neurotransmitter and insulin receptors function more efficiently. This is particularly important because high insulin levels create an inflammatory state, and we know, inflammation causes aging.
All in all this little berry is a pure superfood, and if you can get your hands on it having it once or twice a week will be super beneficial. In Brazil they make Açaí bowls for breakfast as it keeps them buzzing all day long.
I whipped up a little smoothie yesterday morning after my green juice for a little boost with one of these packs that I found at my local health food store (BLUSH LANE Organics for anyone in YEG). I know it's sold in Whole Foods, as when I was living in NYC I bought them all the time so keep your eye out for it-
- 1 immunity Açaí pack - 1.5-2 frozen organic banana's (it is always a good idea to ripen your banana's, freeze them and have them ready for smoothies as they had SO much creaminess after they are frozen) - dash cinnamon (I put it in everything as it's always good to pair with fruits) - tsp Maca powder - tsp super greens powder ( I use vitamineral greens as it is the most hardcore one on the planet!) Whip it up in a high-speed blender and you are SET! Super simple, quick and highly nutritious.
