NUTRITION: BUILDING YOUR GREEN JUICE

E v e r y o n e, in my real life & probably you guys by now, know my affinity with green smoothies + juices, an obsession some might say, but HEY there are worse things to be addicted too! I think what helps me ingest the greenest of the greens is that I know WHAT they are doing to my body. Essentially they are LIFE BLOOD. This is true since the nucleus of chlorophyll is almost i d e n t i c a l to blood plasma's nucleus. So when you're drinking that green juice, you are essentially giving yourself a blood transfusion ;) Sorry if that grosses you out, but it is a beautiful things and makes me feel soooooooo alive.

I want to make this easy for you as people perceive juicing as a arduous task that takes f o r e v e r. I'm not going to say it's the quickest or easiest thing to do, but it can be done in 10-15 minutes start to clean-up once you get the hang of it! Like anything in life, it takes commitment, practice + determination. The most beneficial, beautiful + most rewarding things in life take w o r k! Of course buying cold-pressed juice is a wonderful alternative, but I only like to do that if I'm in a pinch. Bottom line - I believe juicing is probably the biggest single step you can make towards better health!!

Juicing greens provides a myriad of nourishing benefits and helps to prevent and even cure all sorts of diseases, aka lymes disease. In no way am I saying juicing cured my Lymes Disease, but it had a HUGE part to play in my health routine + alkalizing myself. I started just like everyone else, and the best advice I can give you is to just START, everything unfamiliar or unknown can be scary! We build up stories and excuses around it before we have even started! Find a cheap juicer on craigslist or kijiji or purchase a Breville for around $100. It's what I started out with and it served me for years! If we think about it, $100 over a span of a few years is n o t h i n g, especially when you start calculating bottles of cold-pressed juice OR bottles of wine ;) The way I see it, YOUR health is the BIGGEST investment you can make in life! If you don't have your health + vibrancy nothing else matters - your career, relationships, a home, car, vacations, experiences . . . you need your health and body.

5, 6 , 7, 8 . . . Here is how to build a simple + glow inducing Green Juice in 5 STEPS.

1) Start with a healthy base such as cucumber

First of all, you need a solid base for your juice. Cucumber makes a great, smooth base for green juices. You can combine cucumber with some fennel which provides sulfur, potassium, zinc and iron among other nutrients. You can then throw in some celery or green apples for an extra boost.

By the way, your base doesn’t have to be ONLY green vegetables, variation can be good if you are someone who needs to mix things up. Green vegetables are the nourishers, but other vegetables or fruits such as carrots or oranges can also be used. Even green tea, coconut juice and almond milk make some good alternative bases!

2) Drink green juices on an empty stomach

The nutrients in your green juice will be more rapidly absorbed by the body b e f o r e eating. Make a habit of drinking your first green juice of the day before breakfast. After a meal, you should wait around 2 hours before having your next green juice. You want all of your hard work to pay off!

Of course, this is just the ideal. It’s not mandatory! As long as you are drinking your green juices you will get the wonderful benefits. You will be lightyears ahead of non-juicers. How many juices should you drink per day? The more the better, but anything between 1-3 16oz juices per day is great! Listen to your body. We are all different. And again you don't have to do it everyday, start with one a week and build your way up. Maybe all you can do is a few times a week, and that's ok! Don't beat yourself up over it, each juice is a powerful healer.

3) Variety is the spice of life – and the same goes for juicing too!

Mixing things up is more interesting for your taste buds, but that’s not all. By making sure that you get a wide variety of different greens, you will also give your body the range of nutrients that it craves. Kale, spinach, broccoli and other green vegetables all make extremely healthy juice ingredients!

4) Add some ginger (aka ZING) for an anti-inflammatory boost!

Ginger has been known for its medicinal properties for centuries. Recent studies all show that ginger shares pharmacological properties of many anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals, but without all the nasty side effects! Adding some ginger is a great way to decrease inflammation as well as giving a nice tang to your green juice.

5) Plan ahead to avoid unnecessary wastage

Make a juicing schedule so you can plan your grocery shopping ahead of time. I'm not saying that you need to schedule a time slot for every juice of the day, but a little organization goes a long way. This also ensures that you know what you have in at any given time so you won’t be caught out with important ingredients missing!

ALL in all - planning + prepping on the weekend for the week ahead of juices will take a lot of the stress away! It's all about trial and error. Mix, match + juice your lil green heart away!

But most important, be gentle with YOURSELF! NO ONE is perfect, and everyone has a different journey with juicing, drinking green smoothies + incorporating superfoods into their diet. Start small and add one new thing, ingredient every week, every two weeks and see how your body feels. I didn't all of a sudden wake up and juice everyday, and have a pantry full of superfoods. It ALL takes time + self love. Turn inwards and listen to what YOU need. Juicing + drinking your greens can bring new clarity + vitality to your life, so this journey will unfold on its own. Let it be . . . but do the work to where you want to be. 100% responsibility for your body, mind and soul.
