The winter months are coming to a close...

We can feel it in the density of the air, in the energy of the animals, and in the light that now continues to seep through our windows well into the afternoon and evening. With the spring comes the natural inclination to purge, eliminate, and clear out. All of the sudden so many of us are overcome with this need to get all the junk out and focus on rejuvinating. Anybody else share my sentiments?

Why? Becuase the spring is a season that is naturally focused on two things: detoxifying our bodies of all the heavy foods we ate during the cold months and restimulating our bodies’ natural ability to burn all that fat we stored for winter. This is natural, so do not worry. Most people gain around five pounds of 'winter comfort".

I highly recommend doing a mini cleanse, detox and restart program. This doesn't mean just juice for weeks on end or eating minimal amounts to 'detox' the body. This means eating a bounty of whole foods and finding a system that works for you. One that is filled with nutrient-dense superfoods to give your body the strength it needs to totally and completely cleanse. Here are some awesome supplementary tips to start boosting your body’s natural cleansing abilities and give it that rejuvenation its dying for today:

*Incorporate bitter roots into your diet to clean out all that stored mucus on the intestines and sinuses. I love sprinkling farm fresh salads with radishes and sprouts.

*Help promote the fertilization of good bacteria in your colon by eating seasonal leafy greens and sprouts. A healthy colon will help escort everything out in a more timely fashion ;).

*Show your kidneys and liver some LOVE by drinking lemon water in the morning and supplementing with turmeric.

*Detoxify the lymphatic system with berries, cherries, and cranberries. The lymphatic system is responsible for handling all of the toxins that come from both external (from food, air, etc.) and internal (from metabolic processes) sources, in addition to taking all of the junk away from our tissues and neutralizing it. The enzymes and acids in these fruits work hard to cleanse every nook and cranny of your lymph.

*Start to eliminate foods from your diet that are associated with the winter months – foods that are heavy and hard to digest, foods that are fatty, sour, and sweet. Instead, incorporate more foods into your diet that are dry, heating, light, and energizing to balance out the cool, wet, mucky season.

*Get OUTSIDE and get MOVING! Spend some time in the fresh air while building some heat in your body. Support the elimination of toxins through movement and sweat. I love the grounding component of Yoga and the metabolism-boosting properties that comes from building those lean muscles! Walk, run, bike, hoola hoop, you name it. Energize the body and reconnect with the outdoors.

*Invest in a dry brush and start exfoliating. Dry brush exfoliation is an amazing health practice that helps promote circulation, detoxification, and relaxation. Not to mention it will leave your skin GLOWING.

*Bring your thoughts away from negativity and focus on incorporating positive pshycology techniques into your life. Every morning write down 5 things you are grateful for and why. Gratitude lifts the spirit by taking all that negative energy away from you and filling it back up with positivity. Bring that lightness with you throughout your day.
